Commenting on the news that the government says it intends to take the East Coast rail service, run by National Express, into state ownership, local Euro MP, Diana Wallis said:

"It is important that rail services between Yorkshire and London are protected and given National Express's recent intimation that they would close the route the Government had little choice."

Diana Wallis MEP, a regular user of the line when she makes her weekly trip to the European Parliament in Brussels, went on to say:

"Transport in Yorkshire and the rest of the north has long been the Cinderella of political topics. This action by the government on National Express is not a solution for the longer term aim of a high speed train link between Yorkshire and the south."
